Bone grafting is any technique used to increase the amount of bone on the jaw to help the best positioning of your dental implant. New technologies exist to avoid bone grafting.

Bone graft

After the loss or extraction of a tooth, a phenomenon of bone resorption occurs naturally. Not all patients are equal when it comes to this physiological phenomenon called bone loss. At the same time, older generation dental implants (traditional) just like the tooth need a minimum bone volume, both in height and thickness. when the basal implant appeared, the only solution that existed ten years ago was bone grafting, which involves injecting filling material into the jawbone.

The bone graft operation

Bone grafting is therefore used to reconstitute the jaw bone. The fixation of the bone is carried out by simple impaction in the case of chips or by one or more screws in the case of blocks. This screw will be removed during the placement of the dental implant or may remain in place if it does not interfere with the placement of the dental implant. Bone grafting does not have a good success rate and its use is therefore limited to specific applications. Our specialists will prefer the placement of basal implants which allow a one-step treatment without resorting to this risky technique.

Materials used for bone grafts

The materials used depend on the apposition technique and the surgical technique. They may use artificial materials, materials of animal origin, and materials taken from the patient’s body – skull, tibia, or other part of the jaw).

Sinus Lift

Sinus Lift: Operation

The filling of the sinuses, the technique of which was developed in the 1980s, makes it possible to increase the bone volume. A window is opened through the bone tissue under the sinus. Filling material is placed under the membrane of the sinus. It is generally preferable to wait between 6 to 9 months before placing the dental implant. In some cases the implant can be placed immediately when it has sufficient stability.

General information
